Hatha Yoga: Exploring the Five Koshas

In this XXL class, we will experience a classical Hatha Yoga and Yoga Nidra practice through the lens of the Five Koshas — the five layers of our being. This philosophical concept is an essential part of the yogic tradition and can offer a beautiful map for self-exploration.

We often experience ourselves simply as a body and a collection of thoughts, but according to the yogic tradition there is more. We are made of different layers, much like the layers of an onion. In the centre is our true Self, covered by the five koshas. By gently “peeling” these layers through practice, we create the conditions to connect more deeply with ourselves.

The koshas are a map of our inner landscape. We can use this map in our yoga practice whenever we feel stuck or lost, not knowing how to go further or deeper into our experience.

The five koshas are often described as the layers of body, breath, mind, intuition, and bliss.

In this class, rather than analysing the koshas intellectually, we will explore them through direct experience. They are all familiar to us; we simply need to learn how to notice them and recognise them in our practice. This is when we begin to practise yoga from the inside, because bringing the koshas into harmony is a way of connecting body, mind, and spirit.

What to expect:

  • Traditional Hatha Yoga practice with classical asanas and pranayama – A grounded, steady sequence of postures and breathing practices designed to cultivate balance, focus, and embodied awareness.
  • Slower pace and steady practice with time and space to listen and observe
  • Simple explanations of the Five Koshas – Clear and accessible guidance without heavy theory.
  • Experiential exploration of the Five Koshas – A journey through the physical and subtle layers of our being.
  • Final relaxation with Yoga Nidra (Yogic Sleep) – A deeply restorative guided practice leading us toward deep rest and inner ease with a script especially for this class.

After the first time I taught this class, many people told me they were surprised by how much deeper the experience felt. They left feeling calm, connected, and with a sense that they had discovered something new in their practice. For many, this way of exploring yoga stayed with them and gradually became part of their regular practice.
